Color tone – Although both oaks are similar in tone, French Oak generally tends to be a little darker than American Oak. French Oak is a warm golden, honey color whereas American Oak is subtly lighter with pinkish tones. Grain pattern – French Oak tends to have a distinctive, wavy grain pattern with scatterings of pip and burr. American Oak tends to have a straighter, subtle grain pattern.

American Oak (also known as American White Oak) is a native hardwood of North America. It has a coarse, open grain texture and a distinctive figured grain pattern common only to genuine Oak species. Colour ranges from a pale to medium golden brown tone but it also stains well to a wide range of colours if required.

American oak comes from oak trees that grow in America (as opposed to in Europe). While both are pale, American oaks have a slightly pink undertone and European oaks have a honey-hued undertone.

It is better to avoid steam mops on engineered floors. Because the bonds between the layers include adhesives and steam can affect their qualiyty. Moisture can peneterate between layers and weaken the bonds and cause damage to the floor.

In general, the thicker an engineered wood flooring is, the better, not just for general wear and tear, but also for future re-sanding and refinishing projects should you wish to change up the look. This is because it’ll have more layers that can withstand this.

On average, engineered flooring can expect to last around 20 to 30 years when cared for properly. When well looked after, timber flooring can expect to last around 10-12 years before it needs to be re-sanded.

White Oak falls at a 6 (1360) on the Janka Hardness Scale. It is a hard and heavy wood, but still maintains good workability, making it a popular choice for structural use, such as square timber posts.

White Oak is one of the best species for heavy-traffic areas due to its strength and resistance against denting. It is a closed grain wood meaning it has a higher resistance to water and decay. For this reason, it is commonly used in areas exposed to water and moisture. While it may not be completely unaffected by wear and tear, White Oak’s strength and resilience certainly makes it a top choice for areas like kitchens, walkways and busy commercial spaces.

An engineered floor is a floor board made of multiple pieces of timber. Up to 12 cut layers of hardwood timber which are placed press adhesive fixed in different directions. It creates a stronger and more stable wood floor. When compared to solid timber floorboards, it is tough to detect the difference.
